To use the activity, students drag the numbers from the green selection area into the function table following the giving Rule.

Bird Is The Word – Order Of Operation With Exponents

The activity is very hands-on and starts by reviewing the basic Order Of Operation rules for simplifying an expression.

Following the review, the students are presented with practice problems and solutions for solving intermediate level Order Of Operation expressions containing exponents. Each practice problem contains an interactive slider that reveals the steps one at a time.

How Many Squares

The activity takes students step-by-step through each different size square and even lets them move around squares to help them find the solution.

The intelligent navigation in the activity allows teachers to go to the Investigation pages for each size square or teachers can go through the activity page-by-page to show the location of each square.

To play the game, teams try to locate the correct color pattern consisting of three concentric circles. When a team finds the correct color pattern, answering the question correctly determines which team wins the round.

Each of the three rounds consists of seven different color patterns and questions. Answering a question correctly allows a team to change the color pattern in search for the one that matched the color pattern for that round. Each color pattern is represented by a number represented in both Base 10 and Base 2 and each of the three circles represents one of the digits in the Base 2 number. Don’t worry, once you play around with changing the patterns, you’ll understand how everything works. The trick is for students to figure out how to control which pattern is displayed next. To do this, all they have to do is notice the connection between the binary digits and the three circles.

The activity contains 18 different color patterns for the students to evaluate. To complete the pattern, students drag-and-drop the correct color circle into the empty space. If the student drags in the correct color, they are given an immediate puppy thumbs up. However, if they drag in any of the other colors, the puppy pops up with a puppy frown.
